Community Engagement

PDT gives back to every student, the Bay Area and international communities.

Presidio Dance Theatre's focus extends beyond dance.

We work to build community within and beyond the San Francisco Bay Area. We harness the power of the arts to educate and inspire, and forge connections between cultures.

Most dancers join our youth company in elementary school and remain through high school. Many intern with PDT during the summer while in college. Presidio Dance Theatre helps tutor students, supporting their academic trajectories in addition to their artistic growth.

PDT offers a variety of community-building initiatives:

DANCEOUT! (Community Outreach)

DANCEOUT! is a specialized community outreach program founded by Judy G. Bretschneider. With the support of grants and generous donors, PDT offers multi-year scholarships for underserved youth. One hunded percent of our students are accepted into universities, 97 percent are the first in their families to attend university, and most receive scholarships for dance. Three percent of DANCEOUT! students are recruited to dance with professional companies.

Children's Day at the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House

Every year, PDT presents the free program, “Children’s Day at the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House.” Featuring excerpts from our acclaimed “Dancing Across Cultures" program, this fully narrated, multi-cultural dance extravaganza provides an opportunity for 6,000 Bay Area students to experience a live dance performance.

Young Ambassadors Program

Our Young Ambassadors program helps students cultivate leadership and mentorship skills. Young Ambassadors participate in international tours, representing the US. Students engage in global dialogue and exchange, learning cultural diplomacy through the arts. They also present benefit concerts locally and internationally, supporting humanitarian organizations. The success of the Young Ambassadors program earned PDT the US State Department’s “Award For Excellence in Dance and Cultural Diplomacy."

PDT Internship Program

PDT provides free educational and community service opportunities, including paid and volunteer internships for high school students. Students gain experience working in a variety of capacities in a nonprofit environment, developing skills in program administration; public relations and marketing; performance production and tech; and assistant teaching.
